Languages: Letting the Congregation Lead You

There are times when I’ve learned how to sing a song one way but the congregation knows it another way.  This is when I let the congregation help me lead the song.  Besides, it’s hard to fight against even a small congregation.

However, I look at this as a good thing, especially when I’m not as familiar with a song in another language.  We’re going to be singing the song “Doxology” this Sunday in both English and the Hmong.  I have the phonetics to help me sing it, but I didn’t have time to double check the pronunciation with a native speaker.

The plan is to start the song off in English and then move into the Hmong language.  I will start the song the best I can, but I will be listening intently to the people who are Hmong, who essentially make up half the congregation.

This kind of situation, where we don’t quite know the other language well enough, is also the reason Redemption Boulevard, Inc will be recording the song in the Hmong language.  We will actually be able to listen to the song over and over again on our own.

Have you ever let the congregation help you lead a song you weren’t confident on?  What would help you lead the song the next time you sing it?

Share your story and your life…

Sincerely,
