6. How have you changed over the years?
Wow… a LOT. He has given me so many experiences that I never could have dreamed of. This is not what I imagined myself doing. If you had told me that I would be leading multicultural worship, I wouldn’t have believed you. In fact I would have told you that I don’t want to do that.
The Lord is working on my heart. He is taking what was once stone and making it into flesh. He has put in me the desire to lead, which I didn’t have before. And in His sense of humor and grace He keeps giving me things to do that I have said previously that I don’t like, didn’t want, can’t do, and giving me a heart for them.
7. Who is your mentor and why?
Josh Davis. He was gracious enough to take me under his wing in my formative years and continues to be an amazing blessing in my life. I continually see the Lord working in his life and I want to be surrounded by people like that.
We have a lot of similarities and also many things that are completely opposed. This is a great thing because we sharpen each other. For that reason, I am so grateful for our differences and also his depth and maturity in his walk with the Lord. He gives me a good example to follow.
8. What are some tips that you would tell someone just starting off in multicultural worship?
Get to know people from other cultures. Ask them to lunch at a restaurant that represents their culture. Find out what is important to them in worship and in life. What do they value?
Also, find someone who is already doing multicultural worship well and learn from them. Be willing to be stretched and taken out or your comfort zone. Learn how to serve the people you are leading.
9. How do you find people in multicultural worship?
Personally I ride on the coat tails of others. I travel some with Josh and so I meet the people he knows, and then I meet friends of theirs and so on. But for those who don’t have someone like that I think multicultural worship conferences, although they may be few, can be a great way to meet people with the same heart and goals as you.
10. How do you stay motivated today?
Motivation is a tricky thing for me, and so personally I have to keep coming back to the fact that I need to do the best with what I have in what the Lord has called me to.
