Leading by example

Leading by example

One of the most essential principles to casting vision and team building is this – “Never ask your team to something that you’re not willing to do yourself.“  It’s one of those things tells your team that you’re willing to invest time and money that you don’t even think you have towards their growth.

I think John C. Maxwell said it best: “Let’s go do it. Not you go do it.  Let’s go do it.

Leading by example with your time

In my opinion this is one of the hardest things to invest when casting the vision of multicultural worship.  And, usually, the people who sacrifice the most are our families.

I’ve traveled more this year than I ever have.  I’ve gone to Atlanta, GA and Harrisburg, PA just to name a few.

And what did my wife do?

She took off from work using her vacation time so that she could watch our son while I work.  She certainly didn’t have to do that, but it’s something I appreciate.

Johanna is leading by example and supporting the vision that I have for multicultural worship.  She could say no and we could use those vacation days for our family, but she’s making the sacrifice to support me.

Leading by example with your money

I just read in Andy Stanley’s book, Visioneering, that he’s tithed pretty much all his life.  It wasn’t a big deal to take 10% and give it to the church.

But when his church needed to raise a couple million dollars Andy decided leading by example was the best way to go by sacrificing his salary.  He actually told his wife about how God was leading him to do this on Valentine’s Day. It went well.

I was a little surprised when I read that because it meant giving four months of his salary to help their church.  That’s a big sacrifice.

But he wanted to lead by example because he set the vision for a new building.  He was asking his congregation to

sacrificially

give when they just finished raising money for another building.

I don’t think the congregation would have been so willing unless their leader was leading by example and trusting God with that vision.

Lesson…

Casting the vision of multicultural worship means sacrificing your time, money, and energy.  So, if you’re not leading by example, your team won’t follow you.

Remember, “Let’s go do it. Not you go do it.  Let’s go do it.

What are some ways you’re leading by example?

Share your story and your life…
